CC Sabathia went on the 10-day injured list Thursday to take care of his inflamed right knee. That was a given following Wednesday night’s victory over the Orioles in which he earned the win, while working on the painful hinge.
How the Yankees fill in the rotation with the veteran lefty on the shelf is a little trickier. Aaron Boone’s hope is that the 38-year-old Sabathia, who will receive treatments and get the knee drained, will miss just one start.
Before Thursday’s game, Boone said the Yankees will use a reliever to start Friday night’s game against the Royals in Kansas City, Mo., but said the identity of that pitcher hinged on what was needed in the series finale against the Orioles at Camden Yards.
After not using Chad Green, Luis Cessa, David Hale and Nestor Cortes Jr. in Thursday’s 6-5 win, Boone had his pick of relievers to start, but didn’t immediately identify his choice.
“Obviously, we threw [Chad Green on Wednesday] and he will be an option for us [Friday]. We have guys on the roster who can give us length,’’ Boone said.
Several hours after the game, the Yankees announced Green will get his second shot as the opener. On Sunday against the Rays, he retired the first five batters he faced, then gave up back-to-back homers and was lifted.
