New York Mets Sign Albert Almora To Bolster Center Field Depth

The New York Mets have added depth in center field.

The team agreed to a deal with free agent Albert Almora. Almora is 26, and has spent the past five seasons with the Chicago Cubs.

The Mets missed out on star center fielder George Springer, who signed with the Blue Jays on a six-year, $150 million contract. They were also in talks with Red Sox free agent Jackie Bradley Jr.

A good glove who has struggled offensively the last two seasons, Almora figures to serve as a right-handed alternative to Brandon Nimmo. In 28 games during the shortened 2020 season, Almora had a slash line of .167/.265/.200 in just 34 plate appearances. In 2019, Almora slashed .236/.271/.381 with 12 home runs and 32 RBIs in 363 plate appearances.
