MLB Wants Universal Designated Hitter in 2020

The 2020 MLB season will look a lot different when it happens, and one rule change could be hugely significant for 2020 and beyond.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, MLB’s proposal to play the 2020 season would include a universal designated hitter rule. The proposal is partially in place to try to protect pitchers from injury after a shortened spring training.

The universal DH rule is part of the proposal that MLB is expected to present and be accepted by the players.

One question is whether this could be a precursor to this rule becoming permanent. There have been rumblings about a universal DH rule for years now, and it sounded like a realistic possibility that could happen within a year or two even before the season was suspended. If it comes into place in 2020, it’s worth wondering if it will ever go away.
