Major League Baseball is working hard to find a way to salvage the season after the start was delayed because of the global coronavirus pandemic. League officials have been meeting with the MLB Players Association to come up with a plan that could see games begin as early as July.
Under the proposal, all 30 teams would play their games without any fans at stadiums and fields in the greater Phoenix area. Players, coaching staff, umpires, and other essential personnel, would be effectively quarantined at hotels, only allowed to leave to go to and from the stadium.
According to ESPN, the plan has support from federal officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health because it adheres to strict social distancing protocols.
MLB issued a statement confirming they had discussed the option but said they have not reached a decision about how or when the season will begin.
“MLB has been actively considering numerous contingency plans that would allow play to commence once the public health situation has improved to the point that it is safe to do so,” the statement said. “While we have discussed the idea of staging games at one location as one potential option, we have not settled on that option or developed a detailed plan.”
